The initial dose of the vaccine must be given at 6 weeks of age or OLDER (not younger). This practice is based on years of solid research in immunology.
And for those who have been asking if a Parvo vaccination can cure their dogs who have been infected or exposed to Parvo positive dogs:
Sorry, but a vaccine is a preventive not a cure. It should be given when the puppy is healthy and in good condition. When the puppy is already showing signs of Parvo like vomiting or diarrhea or loss of appetite, giving a vaccine will just seal his unfortunate fate.
Why is Parvo Vaccination so important?
Because Parvo causes an extremely severe, highly infectious disease that can easily infect entire litters of puppies in a matter of days. There is no specific treatment against Parvo, only supportive treatment. The fatality rate is very high, in fact more than 70% of infected patients don't make it.
Why should licensed vets be the one to give vaccines?
Because vaccines can sometimes cause allergic reactions that can vary in severity from itching to circulatory collapse (this is life threatening). It is the vet who can best advise you about the signs of an allergic reaction and he can also give necessary life saving meds in case of anaphylactic shock.
So always follow this advice: HAVE YOUR PETS VACCINATED! AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE.
